Myracle Mylk: How does it Compare to Other Non-Dairy Alternatives?

We’ve had Myracle Mylk on our espresso bars for just over a month now and we want to give our insights on how this mighty milk compares to other milk alternatives such as almond, oat or soy milks.

Myracle Kitchen Barista Mylk is made with no dairy, soy, or cane sugar and has no carrageenan or thickeners.

Are You sure it’s Not Milk? The Creaminess Level is Top Notch!

We’ve found that the level of creaminess in Myracle Mylk is definitely more noticeable than that of Almond or Soy milk and creates a very pleasant layer of depth to the drink.

Myracle Mylk uses coconut cream for that smooth creaminess that we find in every sip. This is also met with Oats for that similar smoothness that we find in just plain oat milk. This mixture of ingredients often found in individual alternative milks (coconut milk, oat milk, etc.) creates the perfect medley of characteristics to create a close-to-dairy drinking experience, at least the closest that we’ve tasted!

Getting Technical: Steaming Myracle Mylk

This stuff wasn’t made with James Hoffman, the world renowned coffee genius himself, for it not to steam to a silky smooth consistency!

We’ve found that Myracle Mylk produces a similar micro foam to that of dairy milk, not the same but the closest that we’ve seen done with an alternative milk. Similar to steaming oat milk, Myracle Mylk has the potential to create a well-integrated micro foam that has latte art potential when steamed properly. We’ve found that this milk doesn’t make chunky or separated foam as much as Soy or Almond milk may create.

The Verdict

Myracle Mylk is truly a step forward in specialty alternative milks! This milk was created with baristas and cafes in mind and is designed to be a barista’s companion rather than a challenge in terms of steaming.

Myracle Mylk doesn’t replicate the taste of dairy milk, nor does it entirely replicate its properties but we also don’t think that this is the point. This alternative milk takes the beneficial properties of various milk alternatives and creates something that can be paired with coffee at the same ease that the classic go-to cow milk has.

Try some for yourself with your coffee today or buy a carton to try at home at one of our locations or at timbertraincoffeeroasters.com !

An Affogato is a simple Italian espresso dessert that traditionally uses Vanilla Sorbet that is doused with Espresso on top. That’s it – two simple ingredients working together in a beautiful harmony. Nowadays, it is more popular to serve Affogatos with Vanilla Ice Cream and Espresso on top. Here’s the rundown on how to make a delicious affogato at home:

How Do I Make an Affogato?

First thing’s first: The ice cream.

It’s best to go simple and choose a Vanilla ice cream that’ll compliment your coffee. We recommend using a mid-tier to higher end ice cream that uses Vanilla bean to really bring out the flavour. Avoid using French Vanilla flavoured ice creams (unless that is your vibe of course!) as they tend to have more of an added flavour taste to them which can potentially hinder the coffee tasting experience. Take one or two (or more if you prefer) scoops of ice cream and place into a small bowl.

And now… Coffee!

Hot coffee right from the espresso machine is what you’ll need – stove top espresso or brewed coffee will also do if you don’t have an espresso machine but the experience may differ slightly. Pull a shot of espresso (make sure that yield and time are measuring up to your recipe standards!) into a shot glass. Once the pour is complete, pour it on top of the ice cream and enjoy!

What Coffee Should I Use to Make an Affogato?

We like to use our Caliber Espresso as its bright complexity compliments vanilla notes well! If you like a more bolder experience, maybe even one closer to an Italian style espresso, then we would recommend our Assembly Espresso with those deeper tones. Be sure to watch our Youtube videos on How to Pull an Espresso shot to make sure all of your espressos are tasting to their max potential.

How do I make enough Affogatos to serve at a Party?

When serving a large group of Affogatos as a dessert at a party, it might be easier to prepare them in advance – at least the ice cream component for them. Prepare the amount of bowls that you’ll need, scoop some vanilla ice cream into those, and then place in the freezer. This’ll also make the bowl cold which can create an interesting contrast with the hot espresso pouring on top of it. Once it’s time to serve, set up an assembly line at your espresso machine or stove top espresso and pour shots right on top of the ice cream and serve to your guests! Easy as that.

In this video, Griffin walks us through on how to make slow drip cold brew on an Aeropress!

This process requires a bit of DIY to use with your Aeropress and produces a cold brew that is more acidic and clear than a regular, immersion method cold brew.

This method takes 1-3 hours instead of the 12+ hours that an immersion method cold brew would take, and the coffee is brewed with a bed of coffee and water sitting in the Aeropress with drops of cold water dripping onto it from the ice + water bottle portion that you will be making.

Comment below on what your thoughts on this method are and be sure to subscribe to our Youtube channel

MATERIALS NEEDED:

– Aeropress

Aeropress

– Plastic Bottle

– Pin

– Scissors

– Aeropress Filters

Aeropress Microfilters – Pack of 350

– Karafe

Kalita Wave Glass Server (500ml)

– Scale

American Weigh 2kg Scale with Adapter

– Timbertrain Coffee
https://timbertraincoffeeroasters.com/product-category/coffee/

– Ice

STEPS + RECIPE:

– Cut off bottom of water bottle to make hopper
– Poke hole in the centre of the lid
– Take out Aeropress plunger
– Pre-wet filter & put in place
– Add 38g of coffee once placed on scale
– Take another filter, cut down slightly so it can fit inside Aeropress (acts as s dispersion screen for even water distribution.)
– Dose 100g of Ice
– Tare – Add 400g of water (might not fit all at once, can come back and add more)
– Let water drip through slowly, may take 1-3 hours

The Question that can make or break your coffee drinking experience: How do you Store Coffee Beans?

Imagine: you open the coffee beans that you haven’t brewed since last month, excited to explore their tasting notes once again. You brew the coffee, pour it into your cup, take that long awaited sip and… stale. Your coffee tastes lifeless and without those beautifully accented flavour notes lingering across your palate.

To avoid such a tragic coffee drinking experience, it really makes you wonder: How do you properly store coffee beans?

Air-Tight, Low Light – Heat & Moisture Free.

Coffee goes from a green bean to being roasted to its preferred roast. The coffee is then packaged and distributed and picked up by you to brew at home. Depending on when you open the beans, their roast date and how they are stored can really impact your coffee tasting experience as well as the condition of the beans.

Coffee is best stored in an opaque, air-tight container kept in a cupboard or somewhere with no light at room temperature. In order to keep the flavours of your coffee intact, it’s also important to keep your beans safe from air, heat, moisture and light.

Frequency: Less Can be More – Have you thought about a coffee subscription?

When buying beans, consider how often you will be brewing coffee – sometimes buying smaller quantities of coffee beans will leave you with fresher coffee than buying one large quantity at once if you are just brewing for yourself. A coffee subscription box is a great way to always have a steady flow of fresh coffee delivered on your schedule.

Follow these tips to keep those beans fresh and to have every cup you brew be full of amazing tasting notes.

The post Pre-Ground Coffee vs Whole Bean: Which Is Best? appeared first on Timbertrain Coffee Roasters.

]]>
When it comes to brewing coffee at home, there are really only two types of coffee drinkers out there: those who use pre-ground coffee and those who use whole beans.

While pre-ground coffee offers a level of convenience, most coffee lovers will agree that using whole beans provides an entirely different and far more enjoyable experience.

There are several reasons why using whole beans provide notable value than pre-ground coffee ever could. Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of each and how you can make the best possible cup at home.

Is it better to buy whole bean or ground coffee?

Using whole beans is far superior to pre-ground coffee for a number of reasons. The primary motivation for buying pre-ground coffee ultimately comes down to convenience, and quite frankly, this is really the only selling point.

When you compare pre-ground coffee with using whole beans, the proof is in the cup.

Considering freshness, flavour, and aroma

Here’s the reality; when you buy pre-ground coffee you’re buying coffee that is basically already stale. Ground coffee loses the majority of its natural flavour after roughly 20 minutes of being ground. Pleasant and exhilarating aromas that would normally accompany a fresh cup would be virtually non-existent after this time as well. When you’re buying pre-ground coffee from the grocery store, you’re buying coffee that was roasted and ground weeks—even months earlier.

The result: a flavourless, aromaless, cup of Joe.

The science behind this is actually quite simple. Air is the enemy of food freshness and coffee is no different.

When coffee is ground—especially a fine grind—oxygen is able to permeate through the grinds incredibly quickly due to their small size. The cells contained within coffee beans can have upwards of 1000 volatile flavours and aromas. Once ground, oxidation occurs as these compounds are exposed to oxygen in the air and after about 15 minutes, the coffee has lost approximately 60% or more of its natural flavour.

As coffee beans are obviously significantly larger in size before they’re ground, oxidation isn’t able to occur as quickly as the whole bean provides a protective barrier for the flavourful and aromatic oils contained within.

That’s not to say whole beans can’t go stale, however, their optimal freshness period can last up to two weeks. Compare that against 20-30 minutes after grinding and you can start to get the idea.

Considering brewing methods

Pre-ground coffee is really only good for an auto-drip regular coffee maker and that is largely due to the size of the coffee grinds. Different brewing methods require different grind sizes and when done improperly, you can end up with a cup that is bitter, sour, or bland.

Since pre-ground coffee gives you no control over the grind, whatever flavours (if any at all) you get are ultimately what you’ll be stuck with.

Below are some examples of different coffee brewing methods and the recommended grind size for optimal flavour, aroma, and enjoyment.

Coffee Brewing Method Recommended Grind Size
Espresso Extra Fine
Moka Pot Fine
Pour Over Course – Medium Fine
Aeropress Course -Medium
French Press Course

Final Thoughts

While pre-ground coffee offers convenience, that’s about all it offers. When you use whole coffee beans you have greater control and customization over the brewing process, which results in a far superior cup in every way.

If you’ve never experienced the difference between a cup brewed from pre-ground coffee vs a cup brewed from freshly roasted and freshly ground whole beans, then you’re missing out on the incredible flavours, tantalizing aromas, and the overall enjoyable experience that fuels the love of coffee around the world.

Are you ready to enjoy a blissful coffee experience right from your own home? Shop our freshly roasted coffee beans and taste for yourself the incredible difference that fresh whole beans can make.
